My Writing Journey - Part 4 The Day It Came Down My Street

This post isn’t the beginning of a really bad horror story, although it did happen in the early seventies and most of us don’t want to remember seventies movies. No, the thing that came down my street one amazing summer afternoon was the Bookmobile! Does anyone remember the Bookmobile? I believe that in order to have sighted one (back in the day) you are probably pretty old by now…like myself. I asked my older brother if he remembered because if I was there then he was there, he didn’t. I guess he’s so old he’s losing his memory! But according to my Mom, it really happened. I’m not making it up. The Bookmobile really did come down our street in rural Houston, Texas.

Here’s what the Bookmobile looked like when it rolled down my street.

I tease…that picture is from the 1920s!

I’m not quite that old. But as you can see, the Bookmobile has been around for many, many years. The picture below, circa 1970s, is probably a better likeness of what the Houston Bookmobile looked like.

These days, you’re about as likely to see a Bookmobile driving around town, as you are to see the Spruce Goose flying overhead. With today’s technology, easier vehicular access to libraries and the Internet, there’s no longer a need for the Bookmobile. It’s simply a thing of the past, a virtual dinosaur of days gone by.

As I wrote this passage I asked my youngest who’s thirteen if he’d ever heard of the Bookmobile. Of course he hadn’t. I went on to explain to him what it was all about. His reaction was priceless. The jaw dropped open and he proclaimed how cool an idea that was and wondered why we don’t have them anymore. Sad…

Then I happened upon a website about a Bookmobile. Chris Grawl and Kelly Allen decided to join a fleet of Houston food trucks and started The Billy Pilgrim Traveling Library. I had no idea…Houston has a Bookmobile!

So what’s next? I’m taking my son to visit the Bookmobile of course!

Oh…I never said what any of this has to do with my writing journey. You see, was it not for my love of books and my unhealthy obsession with the Bookmobile, I probably wouldn’t be writing this today. And there you have it.
